Dr. Johanne Cox is a dual-qualified Barrister and Solicitor-Advocate in England and Wales and a Solicitor (non-practicing) in the Republic of Ireland with over 20 years’ experience in international commercial disputes.

Johanne has led arbitration practices at top-tier law firms in London and Cairo and spent a decade working across the Middle East and North Africa in Egypt, the UAE and Qatar between 2010 and 2020. She now divides her time between London and the Middle East. Alongside sitting as an international arbitrator, Johanne mediates commercial, corporate and investment disputes. She has been an accredited mediator since 2005 and is a member of the Society of Mediators in London.

Johanne has extensive experience in handling commercial and contractual disputes across industries and has leading expertise in investment disputes having represented states and foreign investors in investment arbitration proceedings. Her book, Expropriation in Investment Arbitration, Oxford University Press (2019), is a global publication.

She is a Certified International Arbitrator, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution, a Barrister Member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, and a Member of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

Johanne brings decades of experience as both counsel and arbitrator in high-value, complex disputes to her practice as a mediator. She combines a sharp ability to identify the issues that really matter with empathy for the parties, offering insightful interventions to focus minds and to enable participants to find practical, commercial solutions to their disputes.
